The Gladue Writer Program provides Gladue Reports for Metis, Indigenous and Inuit people residing in the Kenora and Fort Frances court districts. In 1999 the Supreme Court of Canada recognized that there was an overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system. Section 718.2(e) of the Criminal Code of Canada addresses that fact and ensures that Indigenous people are treated fairly at every stage of their court process. A Gladue Report takes into account the unique systemic factors that cause an overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system; Some examples are the residential schools, and the 60’s scoop. A Gladue Report also takes into consideration sentencing procedures that might be appropriate in the circumstances because of an individual’s Indigenous Heritage.
